Along with Cathay Pacific and Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines has established exotic standards of passenger service. From London Heathrow it flies to several cities in Europe, the US and Canada, Dubai and its hub at Singapore Changi Airport from where there are connections around South East Asia and Australia. SilkAir is its regional carrier, flying throughout Indonesia, Thailand and India. It owns almost half of Virgin Atlantic Airways, has a stake in Tiger Airways, the low-cost Asian carrier, and will launch a new airline in 2012. Scoot, a medium to long-haul carrier, will start flying to destinations in Australia and China in 2012.

Singapore Airlines Check-in

Online - and mobile - check-in are available between 48 and two hours before the flight is due to depart. At the airport, passengers should collect their boarding passes between three hours and one hour before the flight time. At London Heathrow, check-in desks open three hours before the flight and close 45 minutes before scheduled departure.

Singapore Airlines baggage allowance

Carry-on: Economy-Class passengers can bring one item weighing up to 7kg (15lbs) and measuring up to 115cm (45in) (height plus width plus depth) plus one personal item. Business and First-Class flyers are allowed two pieces weighing a maximum of 7kg each.

Checked: 20kg for Economy flyers, 30kg for Business-Class passengers and 40kg for First-Class travellers. The infant baggage allowance is 10kg plus a collapsible buggy, carry-cot and infant items. KrisFlyer Elite Gold and Star Alliance Gold members are allowed an extra 20kg to all destinations except Canada and the US. PPS Club members are entitled to 100 per cent more free baggage allowance. For travel to Canada and the US a piece concept is used. All classes of traveller are allowed two pieces of luggage, the weight of each piece must be no heavier than 23kg. 

Excess: Singapore Airlines levies excess charges by zone. For example, on a flight from the UK (Band 4) to Hong Kong (Band 2) the excess rates are $55 (US) per kg.

Singapore Airlines legroom

Seat pitch: 81cm (32in) in Economy, 147cm (58in) in Business Class and, in First Class, suites (on the A380), lie-flat beds and seats giving up to 200cm (78in or so) of pitch in First Class.

Pre-arranged seating

Yes, during check-in. Preferred seats may be purchased by retrieving your booking online. The fee is $50 US per sector on most aircraft.

Passenger change details

Depends on the ticket. In general, the lower the fare, the more restrictions there will be and you may not be able to change your itinerary. There will be charges for any changes. Make changes online or by calling your local Singapore Airlines office.

Child fares

Child fares are available for children aged between two and 11 years. On a London-Singapore flight the child fare is about 75 per cent of the adult fare and lap infants travel for 10 per cent.

Senior fares

There are no discounts for older travellers.

Pets

Only guide dogs are permitted in the cabin. There are two ways for pets to travel: accompanied (for certain breeds of cats and dogs only) where you check-in and reunite with your pet at the passenger terminals of your flight's departure and arrival airports (not available at all airports) or unaccompanied where you check-in and collect your pet from the cargo terminals at your flight's departure and arrival airports. The Pet Travel Scheme applies on flights departing from Singapore to London.

Carrying musical instruments

Oversized musical instruments can only be carried onboard if you purchase an extra seat, in the same class, to accommodate it. The maximum weight and dimension allowable is 75kg weight, 61in high and 19in wide (based on armrest to armrest seat width).

In-flight service

In a league of its own. Economy Class fare is great with regional dishes, a beverage service and snacks. Travellers on more expensive fares can Book the Cook. Flyers select a main course from a premium selection of dishes at least 24 hours before the flight. A full in-flight entertainment system includes movies, television, music, games, iPod and iPhone Connectivity and office productivity software.
